Action to be taken against police abuse in video clip
according to rapporteur report from Global new light of Myanmar, link ,A video clip posted online on Saturday night titled “an accident in Rakhine State” shows footage of members of the Myanmar Police Force beating up villagers. The video clip was broadcast by several media outlets, according to the Information Committee.
As soon as the video was found online, the information committee contacted officials of the Myanmar Police Force and the Ministry of Home Affairs. An investigation was immediately launched.
According to the Myanmar Police Force, the video was made when a combined team comprised of police from the No. 2 Border Guard Post and No. 36 Security Force made an area clearance operation in Kotankauk Village on 5 November. It was found that Constable Zaw Myo Htike recorded the video clip when 10 policemen detained several villagers.
The area clearance operation occurred after six violent attackers on three motor bikes shot at 11 policemen from the Norular Police Outpost led by Police Inspector Kyaw Myint of No. 22 Security Force at 5:50 pm on 3 November.
In the attack, Police Lance Corporal Min Min Soe died after being shot four times and Police Lance Corporal Myo Zaw Ko was injured.
The police then conducted the area clearance operation in Kotankauk Village on 5 November, acting on a tip-off that the attackers were being sheltered in Kotankauk Village. In the same village, according to the tip-off, lived a man who had distributed documents and placards containing fake information to villagers that they used during a protest on 3 November when diplomats visited the village, said the press release of the information committee.
In the clearance operation, it was learnt that Nu Arlaung, 22, Sauli Mullah, 35, and Mammud Nawbi, 32, were allegedly involved in the armed attack. The operation also uncovered six machetes, one knife and one spear.
Following the operation, the police released the remaining villagers and urged them to support community peace in the village.
The operation was led by Police Superintendent Ye Tun Naing of the No. 2 Border Guard Police Force and Sub-Inspector Te Zar Lin of the No. 36 Security Force. It is learnt that the video clip was made by Constable Zaw Myo Htike. The police officer who is seen beating villagers in the video clip is Constable Pyai Phyo Thwin, said the press release of the State Counsellor’s Office Information Committee.
Further investigations are being carried out to expose other police officers who beat the villagers in the operation, according to the press release.
